Proudly presenting the first set of stills from Extraordinary, a music video currently in production for hip hop artists Illus and Blueprint. It’s a song about how you don’t have to have superpowers to change the world, and the video we’re putting together features a pair of pint-sized heroes doing exactly that. Stay tuned for updates — we’re hoping to have production and post-production completed very soon.

Last year, I had the opportunity to work on one of the most fulfilling projects I’ve been able to tackle in my entire career in film and video.
Director, producer, and editor Brett Orzechowski, one of the founders of the nonprofit organization Our Baseball Haven (and a former colleague of mine from the New Haven Register’s multimedia department) documented on video the inaugural season of the Torrington Titans, the first crowd-owned collegiate-league baseball team in the United States. That footage of triumphant wins, heartbreaking losses, and quintessential sunny afternoons at the ballpark became part of a much larger story, one about an innovative approach to community sports ownership and a small Connecticut manufacturing town seeking a way to reinvent itself after years of economic struggle.
Brett and I spent several months in early 2011 working on post-production, cutting together Titans games, team footage, and images of day-to-day life in Torrington with the stories and insights of players, coaches, fan/owners, residents, and town officials. The resulting feature-length documentary, T-Town, is both a sports film and a chronicle of the realities facing once-thriving small towns across America.
T-Town has screened at Quinnipiac University and as an Official Selection of the 2011 Silk City Flick Fest; it’s currently available on DVD from the film’s official website. For more information, check out www.ttownmovie.com, or visit the film’s IMDB page.

Ahhh, 2011 — a year that has forced me to be a stranger to my own website for entirely too long.
Not that I don’t have a few good excuses for all the cobwebs that have accumulated since my last update (getting married and finishing grad school being the two major ones), but a website is sort of like a hotel — if you don’t keep it spiffy and up-to-date, nobody’s going to want to visit. So, my apologies for the faded wallpaper and that creepy brown stain on the ceiling… Let’s see if we can’t get this place back up to that five-star standard (or at least to the level of a more-tolerable-than-expected Motel 6), shall we?
For starters, here’s a quickly-produced video I made to test out the capabilities of my new DSLR. Like a lot of longtime camcorder devotees, I’m still getting used to the form factor of what is basically a still camera that just so happens to shoot incredible-looking HD video, but after just a few short weeks I think I’m going to stick with this baby for the long haul. Looking forward to doing some serious filmmaking with it. Enjoy — more to come.

Hello and welcome to the new and (hopefully) improved NRSFilm.com, the homepage of Connecticut-based filmmaker and writer Nick Rocco Scalia — hopefully this site is even more functional, easier to navigate, and nicer to look at than my old one. Please take a moment to check out my work as a director, screenwriter, and video producer, and keep checking back for updates on my latest projects and what’s to come. Thanks, as always, for stopping by!

Things get heavy for me this winter as I get cranking on my first-ever metal video, a clip for the leadoff track from VRSA’s 2010 album Old Man Gray. The band, whom I first encountered while in pre-production on my most recent short film, Easy, came up with a killer concept that we’ve had a lot of fun fleshing out — I won’t give anything away just yet, but suffice it to say that this won’t be your average doom-and-gloom metal video (even if the main character is someone you’d probably want to avoid running into if you can help it). Thus far, we’ve shot some great footage of the band performing, and recently began tackling some of the video’s extensive narrative sequences as well.
For more on VRSA, check out the band’s MySpace page, and if you’re a fan or a CT resident who might want to appear in the video, drop me an email and just maybe we can make that happen, too.

Easy, for me, began with a pretty simple challenge: After a long stretch writing and directing comedic films of various types, could I come up with something a little bit darker, a little harder-edged, a little more like the brilliant and often brutal film noirs that I’ve admired so much over the years?
From that starting point came a script about two very different types of criminals — one young, cocky, and all too willing to get his hands dirty, the other older, perhaps wiser, and far more cautious — and the time they’re forced to spend together after pulling off a heist for their mercurial boss. Shot largely in the summer of 2010 with some of the best actors and crew I’ve ever had the opportunity to work with, the film has taken a slow but steady path toward completion, and I’m happy to report that it should see the light of day sometime within the next few months.
For now, you can learn more about the film (and see the trailer) here, and check back soon for updates, clips, and details on when and where you can see Easy when the final edit is complete.

Hey all! Just to let you know, NRSFILM.com is… changing. My old website was bitten by a radioactive spider, and just as soon as it’s finished mutating into whatever freakish thing it’s about to become, I’ll let you know. Check back soon!
